As the state’s second-biggest city, there’s a little something for everyone, and rest assured, you have many military families around that know the lifestyle.
Read on to learn about the military bases in Colorado Springs that might help you feel little more at home here at your new duty station!!
When moving to a new military base, whether it’s your first or fifth duty station, it is always a process getting to know the new area you are going to call home. Colorado Springs is actually a very sought after station, and a bucket list place to live for most military members. The Front Range is home to multiple installations; Fort Carson Army Base, Peterson Air Force Base, and Shriever Air Force Base.
● Fort Carson
The mountain post takes pride in calling itself “The Best Hometown in the Army” The installation sits on approximately 137,000 acres of land in southern of Colorado Springs, and actually goes down into multiple counties of the state, and is easily the largest military installation here in the city. It’s home to 20,000 work forces. Established in 1942, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the base has developed enormously to its present size since then. Base housing includes around 3,000 single family housing units and 66 barracks buildings with over 8 thousand rooms. On post you will find that you have the essentials you and your family need with a few extras included; recreation facilities including gyms, multiple parks, a golf course and a bowling alley. There are is one middle school and multiple elementary schools for the younger kiddos. If you and your family do plan on living on, or near post, you have access to the Fountain- Fort Carson School District 8 for high schoolers. You have The Exchange for basic home goods and of course the Commissary for groceries. You have endless attractions and activities at your fingertips living here on the southwestern part of Colorado Springs. Post is close to the main Highway that runs through the city so you have quick access to Downtown Colorado Springs, Garden of The Gods, Manitou Springs and Old Colorado City, just to name a few spots. Living off post shouldn’t be difficult as there are multiple housing options; including town homes, condominiums, apartment complexes
● Peterson Air Force Base
Peterson is home to The North American Aerospace Command (NORAD), is the United States Northern Command headquarters (USNORTHCOM), as well as Space Force’s 21st Space Wing and many other commands. The area was actually part of the land that was purchased after the Pearl Harbor attacks as a support base and initially provided training for multiple armed forces. This base actually shares its air field with Colorado Springs Municipal Airport! There are a few amenities that Peterson offers, and your basic essentials are provided. The area alone is gorgeous but when the time comes that you want to step outside of the bases gates your are located a little more south-central of the greater Springs area. Located right off of the southern powers corridor you have quick access to the hustle and bustle of the city. This area is home to School District 11, which provides multiple schools for all ages!
● Schriever Air Force Base
This less, well known base is located about 10 miles east of Peterson Air Force Base. Fun fact, Shriever was orginally known as Consolidated Space Operations Center (CSOC), was renamed the Falcon Air Force station, and it wasn’t until 1998 that it was named Shriever Air Force Base. The base offers more support to Peterson and commands such as NORAD; in conjunction with providing space for other commands such as the 2nd Space wing and many other active duty commands and personal. The area is also home to contractors, civilian employees and reservists. Being in this area, you have a few different school districts available for you kids, Ellicot District 22, Falcon District, District 49 and District 20!!
